Aloe vera is a staple in many homes — on windowsills, in skincare, and in 'healing' drinks. But is aloe vera toxic to cats? Yes. The plant contains anthraquinones that cause vomiting, diarrhoea, and lethargy in cats.

Aloe vera plant - toxic to cats

Plant vs gel: what is dangerous?

The whole leaf contains latex and anthraquinones — the parts cats typically chew. Pure inner gel is less toxic but still not recommended for cats to ingest. Skincare products with aloe may contain alcohol and other irritants.

Symptoms after chewing aloe

  • Vomiting and diarrhoea
  • Red urine (from anthraquinone compounds)
  • Lethargy and tremors in severe cases
  • Changes in appetite

What to do after your cat chews aloe

Remove remaining plant material, rinse your cat's mouth gently if safe to do so, and call your vet. Most cases are mild to moderate, but dehydration from vomiting needs monitoring. For more risky plants, see our 30 toxic houseplants guide.
