Cat Poisoning Symptoms: What to Watch For

Cats hide pain and illness instinctively — which makes poisoning especially dangerous. Knowing cat poisoning symptoms helps you act before irreversible damage occurs.

Some toxins show few early signs
Lilies, antifreeze, and paracetamol may cause minimal symptoms before organ failure. If you know your cat was exposed, call the vet even if they seem fine.
Early warning signs
- Vomiting or retching
- Excessive drooling or foaming
- Loss of appetite
- Lethargy or hiding
- Diarrhoea
Serious symptoms — seek emergency care
- Tremors, twitching, or seizures
- Difficulty breathing or rapid breathing
- Pale or yellow gums
- Collapse or inability to stand
- Not urinating (especially after lily exposure)
Symptoms by toxin type
Chocolate causes agitation and heart changes. Onions cause delayed anaemia. Permethrin flea treatments cause tremors. Antifreeze causes drunken behaviour then kidney failure. Track timing and progression — your vet needs this information.
