Ibuprofen is in millions of UK medicine cabinets — and it is toxic to cats. Even one tablet can cause stomach ulcers, kidney failure, and neurological signs.

Ibuprofen - dangerous for cats

How ibuprofen harms cats

NSAIDs like ibuprofen block protective prostaglandins in the stomach and reduce blood flow to the kidneys. Cats metabolise these drugs poorly, so toxic effects appear at much lower doses than in humans.

Symptoms of ibuprofen poisoning

  • Vomiting — sometimes with blood
  • Loss of appetite and lethargy
  • Increased thirst or reduced urination
  • Stomach pain and black tarry stools
  • Seizures in severe cases

Accidental ingestion — act fast

Dropped tablets, chewed blister packs, and Nurofen left on counters are common causes. Call your vet with the strength (200 mg vs 400 mg) and number of tablets. Early decontamination and supportive care improve outcomes.
