Is Milk Bad for Cats or Actually Toxic?

Cartoons show cats lapping up milk — but most adult cats are lactose intolerant. If you ask can cats drink milk, the honest answer is: it is usually a bad idea, even if it is not a true toxin like chocolate or lilies.

Lactose intolerance vs true toxicity

Most cats lose the ability to digest lactose after weaning. Drinking cow's milk causes digestive upset — diarrhoea, gas, and stomach pain — rather than organ failure. That said, kittens need species-appropriate formula, never cow's milk long-term.

Symptoms after drinking milk

  • Diarrhoea within a few hours
  • Vomiting
  • Bloating and discomfort
  • Dehydration if diarrhoea is severe

Safer alternatives and treats

Lactose-free cat milk products exist, but treats should still be occasional. Plain cooked chicken, commercial cat treats, or small amounts of cat-safe human foods are better choices. See our guide on which human foods cats can eat safely for moderation tips.

When milk is more than just upset stomach

Flavoured milk, coffee with cream, and milkshakes may contain chocolate, xylitol, or alcohol — all true toxins. Scan mixed foods rather than assuming milk is the only ingredient.
