Are Poinsettias Toxic to Cats? Myth vs Reality

Every December, cat owners ask: are poinsettias toxic to cats? The short answer is yes — but the danger is often overstated. Here is the myth vs reality, and when you should actually worry.

Myth: Poinsettias are deadly to cats
Poinsettias contain irritant sap that can cause drooling, vomiting, and mouth irritation — but they are generally considered mildly toxic, not lethal. Most cats who nibble a leaf recover with supportive care.
Reality: Irritation, not organ failure
The white sap (latex) irritates the mouth and stomach lining. Symptoms are usually self-limiting. That said, kittens, elderly cats, and cats who eat large amounts need a vet call.
When to call the vet
- Persistent vomiting or refusal to eat
- Swelling of the mouth or difficulty swallowing
- Lethargy lasting more than a few hours
- You are unsure what plant was eaten

Lilies, mistletoe, holly, and chocolate pose far greater dangers. Read our Christmas plants guide and holiday hazard hub.
